What are “superfoods”?
Superfoods are specific foods that are generally known to be nutrient-rich. The internet is overwhelmingly full of websites containing different lists of superfoods. The term “superfood” is a well-known marketing word that does not necessarily indicate if a specific food should or should not be consumed, or determine that one food is better than another. However, knowing these “superfoods” can help us identify some nutrient dense foods to add into our diet. Eat a balanced diet and chances are you are eating superfoods everyday. Here is my limited list of common “superfoods”:
Dark green leafy vegetables → kale, spinach, collard greens
Other vegetables → garlic, sweet potato, tomatoes
Fruits → berries, avocados
Legumes → beans, peas, lentils
Nuts and seeds → almonds, peanuts, sunflower seeds
Dairy → eggs, kefir (thin yogurt, you can find the brand “lifeway” in many stores)
Whole grains → brown rice, oats, whole wheat
I will be posting more blogs about specific “superfoods”. We will uncover what kinds of nutrients they contain and why you should include them in your diet.
